English is a mixture of other languages that have contributed many synonyms to its vocabulary. A good example is phrasal verbs, which are composed of a basic verb+added words that change the meaning of the basic verb. The phrasal verb “to go out” (“go” derived from German) is equivalent to “to exit” (derived from French). Similar cases are: “to give in”= ”to succumb”; “to look forward to”=”to expect”. Modern Hebrew spoken in Israel tends to be informal. Most Israelis may feel intimidated if spoken to with expressions that are sometimes taught in traditional Ulpans. Therefore, use the following:”Where are you from originally?” = “me-e-fo ata ba-ma-kor”(to a man), “me-e-fo at ba-ma-kor”(to a woman); “What’s your name?” = “ekh kor-eem le-kha”(to a man), “ekh kor-eem lakh” (to a woman).
